Ayvalik is an intriguing town situated between Izmir and Canakkale on the north Aegean coast of Turkey. It is home to 22 small islands and it is only 25 km east of the Greek island of Lesvos. It was once inhabited by Greeks and was originally named Kydonia, the islands in the region were also called Hekatonis. Ayvalik has gone through a long history of occupations, which is why it has such a distinctive history.
