Karpathos is a peaceful island in the Dodecanese complex and offers a sense of privacy to many guests who want to discover the hidden gems of the Aegean Sea. The capital of Karpathos is Pigadia which functions as the commercial center of the island, featuring various amenities, a natural harbor, nightlife, and dining options. Although Pigadia is the sole modernized settlement of the island, there are another 10 villages that surround the capital, all reflecting a rare image of Greece that make you feel like you are traveling back in time. For example, within the charming village of Olympos, you will find people dressed in traditional costumes, and musical instruments such as the Lyre and lute will capture your heart. According to legend, the Karpathian pirates traveled to the highest mountain in Greece (Mount Olympus) and kidnapped the gods, bringing them to the highest hilltop in Karpathos and thus creating a mysterious fold in mythology. Till the present day, Karpathos has striking mountains, customs, feasts, and hospitable people that remind us of yesterday’s Greece. That is not all, the mountainous village of Menetes is known for its medieval architecture and the village of Mesohori is known for its breathtaking views of the Aegean and traditional festivals that take place every summer. The coastal village of Diafani and the seaside village of Finiki are located on opposite ends of Karpathos and offer the wonderful opportunity for a boat excursion to the island of Saria and Kasos. If you are visiting Rhodes or Crete, you must definitely organize a boat trip to Karpathos and be fully rewarded with an exceptional sailing adventure.

A boat trip in Karpathos can be spent exploring the spectacular beaches that fill the unique coastline. From Pigadia, situated on the east side of the island you will come across many pebbled coves and small inlets. One of the best beaches in Karpathos is Apella, a secluded yet scenic cove forms where azure waters emanate side-to-side along with lush pine trees. With a catamaran, you can enjoy moments of relaxation and tranquility in this secluded slice of paradise. You also have the option to rent a motorboat and dedicate a day to Amoopi Bay and Kyra Panagia. Starting from Pigadia, Amoopi is within easy reach, offering beautiful coves and shallow waters. A little further, Kyra Panagia also offers an incredible swimming experience and you can treat yourself at a traditional seaside tavern.

Afoti, Forokli and Ahata are some other well-known beaches accessible from Pigadia. Pigadia is the island’s main harbor, though not all boats depart from here. Karpathos forms two circles where mountainous villages such as Menetes in the south, Mesohori in the center, and Olympos on the north-west side all merge together harmoniously with charming seaside settlements. Diafani for example is located in the village of Olympos and is ideal for boat trips to Saria island. Finiki is another seaside village that is ideal for boat trips to the island of Kasos you might like to visit.

Saria is a once inhabited island divided by a channel called “steno” and is only accessible by boat. Here you will enjoy swimming in crystal clear waters in the so-called “Troulakas” sea cave. Palatia is another beach within easy reach, you can make pleasant stops and enjoy hiking through a gorge to complete a wonderful day cruise. You can also combine trips from Karpathos to Kasos by boat. A sailing adventure from Karpathos to Kasos and ending in Crete is an exclusive itinerary. We recommend you hire a sailboat with a skipper since the winds can get quite strong in the southern Dodecanese. The Carpathian Sea is a name given to this authentic corner of the complex formed by Karpathos and Kasos as you approach Crete. You also have the option to enjoy island-hopping on a catamaran to Armathia and Meganisi near Kasos or cruise to Rhodes and Tilos. As you sail, you will explore breathtaking bays and encounter the natural wonders of Greece with their own hidden story behind them. Finally, Karpathos may seem like a Greek island situated in the far-flung corners of the Dodecanese, but is an unspoiled destination you can always consider adding to your sailing itinerary.
