Andros is the second largest and the greenest island in the Cyclades complex. It is only hours away from Athens by ferry and is a wonderful destination for a weekend getaway. Upon arrival, you will come across the capital, Chora. Situated at the heart of the island, you will find quaint passageways, large squares, and local restaurants. It is no wonder that Chora is considered to be one of the most impressive villages of the Aegean. A variety of ancient sights and excellent infrastructure are built on a granite peninsula. Andros has a natural rugged landscape and was once known as Ydroussa for its rich water sources. You will come across an abundance of freshwater springs, alternate mountainous landscapes, rivers, and lush valleys, and of course, pristine beaches. Before you rent a boat in Andros, you might like to take a trip to the past and visit ancient settlements. The Archaeological site of Paleopolis, the medieval village of Messaria, and Paleokastro are definitely worth visiting. Paleopolis is the island’s former capital, which supplied ships to Xerxes after being consequently colonized by the Greek fleet. Messaria is a wonderful village that maintains its verdant vegetation and has fertile farms supplying products to Chora. Paleokastro is renowned to preserve the island’s customs and traditions with stone houses, windmills, and impressive views of the bay of Korthi. During the age of Antiquity, Andros was an important maritime center and was the most fortified village in Greece at the time. According to mythology, Andros, Thassos, and Mykonos are siblings and they all took their name from Anius, son of Apollo. Once you have discovered the towns and settlements of your choice, renting a boat in Andros will ensure you explore several organized and remote beaches.

The scenery is hard to forget with a yacht charter in Andros. You may start by visiting the most photographed beach on the island, Grias Pidima. The beach is situated in a remote place on the southeast side of the island. Legend says that during the ottoman conquests, a woman who sought refuge opened the path to them and as a way of punishing herself, jumped from the high rocks. Today many visitors take pictures of the petrified statue rising above the water. Another beach worth visiting is Achla Beach. You can enjoy swimming and snorkeling since the water is calm here at any time of the year. Hiring a catamaran or motor yacht may be highly recommended since the beach is hard to reach and there are no amenities. Closer to the port of Gavrio, you will find the beach of Agios Petros. With a motorboat or speedboat, you can enjoy finding your own spot of shade on the open shore, the waves are not too violent and the waters are transparent.

Andros is known for its hefty Meltemi winds, renting a sailboat might be the best option. Sailboats are stable and comfortable, allowing the vessel to drive through the thickness of the water and the strength of the wind. Closer to the north, Andros becomes less and less noisy. Zorko’s beach would make a great day cruise and has a virgin bay with wonderful views. For a longer cruising experience, you may consider visiting other islands nearby. With a skipper on board, you may explore Tinos, Mykonos, or Kea. Finally, Andros has several crowded areas but plenty of remote beaches you can enjoy with a boat rental trip. Hiring a boat will make your vacation less overwhelming and you will be able to make stops and enjoy eating at a restaurant by the coast.
